Jessie commenced at Robert Stary Lawyers in 2012. Jessie appears regularly as counsel in the Magistrates’ Court and County Court. She has also appeared in a number of contested bail applications in the Supreme Court of Victoria, and in Mental Impairment investigations under the Mental Health Act. As a solicitor Jessie specialises in terrorism offences. She has prepared major terrorism matters before the Supreme Court, Victorian Court of Appeal and High Court of Australia. Many of these cases are in previously uncharted areas of terrorism law. They have substantially contributed to the jurisprudence in this area. She also has experience challenging INTERPOL ‘Red Notice’ extradition warrants, and has acted for clients facing extradition to foreign countries.
Prior to commencing at Robert Stary Lawyers, Jessie worked as legal assistant on the defence team of former Bosnian Serb President Radovan Karadzic, at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). In 2014 Jessie assisted in the review and revision of the defence closing submissions.
Jessie graduated from the University of Melbourne with a double honours degree in Law and Arts. Her Arts Honours thesis in international relations and strategic bombing doctrine received the highest commendation for her cohort. During her studies she was employed by the University as a seminar tutor of Middle Eastern politics. She continues to peer review articles on international law and politics for the Arts faculty.
Outside the law, Jessie set up and manages a fair-trade manufacturing business in Tanzania. SEW (Supporting + Empowering Women) is a social enterprise that employs HIV+ women in Tanzania. SEW seeks to end the stigma associated with HIV by demonstrating that HIV+ women are resilient, industrious and capable
