Simon graduated in law with a Juris Doctor degree from Melbourne University. Before studying law, he had a successful career as a senior manager and consultant in a range of businesses in Australia, the UK and the USA.
Although he has had considerable experience as an advocate in the Magistrates’ Court, Simon has tended to specialise in indictable matters covering homicide, sex and drug offences and fraud among others and with a focus on complicated matters with large briefs. This work has often involved much written advocacy, including six Petitions for Mercy.
Simon also has relevant experience with medical and other health practitioners whose criminal charges has put their professional registration with AHPRA at risk. This work generally entails the preparation of extensive documentation to submit to AHPRA and to other associated bodies such as Working with Children authorities.
Simon joined Stary Norton Halphen in early 2011 after voluntary work with Fitzroy Legal Service and with the Northern Territory Legal Aid Commission in Alice Springs.

Simon’s reflections:
I find criminal law a fascinating and vital area. It involves a mix of people who come from all walks of life and whose interactions with the criminal justice system cover a broad range of offences
The legal system can be very confusing and this, combined with the extensive power of the state, means that many defendants are at a considerable disadvantage. Our role is to offset this inherent disadvantage for our clients

Advice from a competent and experienced criminal lawyer before you are interviewed can and often does have a meaningful impact on the outcome of your case and in some instances, is the difference between whether your matter proceeds to court or not.
