Rian Farrell, 23, has pleaded not guilty to murdering his best friend, Liam Cahill, during a brawl in a Melbourne apartment, claiming he acted in self-defence. The court heard that the two had been drinking and that an argument escalated into a physical fight, with witnesses stating that Cahill threw the first punch.
While Farrell admitted to stabbing Cahill, his lawyer, Sam Norton, said, "They were essentially best mates. The idea that he's formed … a murderous intention, again, is inconsistent with that."
Despite this, the prosecution highlighted the severity of the act, noting that Cahill was stabbed "through the heart." Farrell is set to appear in the Supreme Court next month for further proceedings.
