Brett Barratt is a Partner at Stary Norton Halphen & Galbally and a Law Institute of VictoriaAccredited Specialist in Criminal Law.

Joining the firm with extensive experience in criminal law, Brett represents clients in matters across the Magistrates', County and Supreme Courts of Victoria. He regularly instructs Counsel and King's Counsel in complex indictable proceedings, including matters before the Court of Appeal and the High Court of Australia.

Brett advises and represents clients charged with a broad range of criminal offences, including homicide, sexual offences, Commonwealth and State drug offences,fraud and other dishonesty offences, assault, family violence matters and intervention order proceedings. He also has significant experience acting in proceedings involving the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC), suppression order applications, interstate investigations, and matters arising under the Crimes (Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried) Act and the Serious Offenders Act.

Brett is recognised for his thorough preparation, strategic advice and strong advocacy, working closely with clients to achieve the best possible outcome at every stage of the criminal justice process. He has successfully defended clients in serious criminal trials, secured acquittals, and achieved successful appeal outcomes resulting in convictions being overturned.

In addition to his practice, Brett is Deputy Chair of the Law Institute of Victoria Criminal Law Section and a member of the Criminal Law Executive Committee.

Brett's expertise has been recognised in Doyle's Guide, where he was named a Leading Criminal Defence Lawyer in Victoria in 2026, following recognition as a Recommended Criminal Defence Lawyer in 2024 and 2025. He has also been recognised as a Leading Traffic & DUI Lawyer in 2025 and 2026, after being named a Recommended Traffic & DUI Lawyer in 2023 and 2024.
