Madeleine Ulbrick

Madeleine holds a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours, a Juris Doctor and a PhD from Monash University, where she won a number of academic prizes, including the dissertation prize for her Honours thesis and the prize for Psychiatry, Psychology and Law. She completed her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice with the College of Law.

Madeleine previously practised in the Northern Territory as a solicitor advocate, appearing daily in the Children’s Court, Local Court and Supreme Court of Alice Springs. She was also an associate at the Supreme Court of Victoria and a Senior Legal Research and Policy Officer at the Victorian Law Reform Commission.

Madeleine has a particular interest in criminal law involving young people, particularly young people charged with serious offences. She began her career working with young people in a therapeutic residential care setting, providing her with valuable experience in understanding the circumstances and vulnerabilities that can arise in matters involving children and young people.

Madeleine has expertise in mental impairment and the law and family violence. She has given expert evidence at national parliamentary inquiries, presented her research at national and international conferences, and worked directly on law reform. She has also been commissioned to produce research for the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Madeleine was a longstanding volunteer at Women’s Legal Service Victoria and has published her research in leading law journals.
